Engineering Officer Cadet


A trained marine engineering officer must ensure the smooth operation of the ship’s propulsion plants and support systems during the entire seafaring process. Experiencing a fast paced career growth, an engineering officer is also offered an excellent tax free remuneration at an early stage of the career. As in the case of a navigation officer, an engineering officer will also work on contract basis which makes it easier to plan work and family life.

Working independently and taking charge of one’s career, will also help create a plan that leads to a full and satisfactory retirement once the days of adventure and exploration draw to a close.

In order to fulfil your dream of becoming an Engineering Officer Cadet, with a thorough knowledge in marine engineering, you must meet these basic entry requirements to follow our seaman/ marine engineering courses, at the best institute for marine training in Sri Lanka:

  • GCE O/Ls in 6 subjects, including a credit pass for English
  • GCE A/L in the streams of Maths (with 02 passes), Bio Science (with 02 passes). It is essential to have passed Physics or Combined Maths
    "S" pass for Engineering Technology & One other “S” pass or “S” pass for Bio Technology & “S” pass for science for technology or “S” pass Science for Technology & One other “S” pass
  • Between 18 - 24 years of age
  • Mental and physical fitness
  • 6/6 vision and colour vision

Mentored by lecturers with years of experience in officer training, engineering officer cadet trainees will be well-rounded and able to confront challenges confidently and intelligently. On completion of the training programme and the exams formulated by the Ministry, they will also receive a certificate of competency to work on a foreign-going ship as a Third Engineer or Fourth Engineer, making this programme the most highly rated post-A/L Seaman course in Sri Lanka.
