Those who successfully complete this course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of electronic navigation equipment to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by the STCW Code, as amended. This knowledge, skill and understanding should include but is not limited to:
It is assumed that trainees undertaking this course have accomplished some formal instruction in terrestrial navigation, have at minimum some familiarisation with visual navigation, and have accomplished a period of supervised bridge watch-keeping duties. Trainees should also have considerable familiarisation with personal computing operating systems, keyboards and mice or trackballs. OR
The trainees undertaking this course should have undergone pre-sea training for deck cadets and sea service of not less than six months as a deck cadet, OR
The trainee should have competence in deck rating, have completed sea service for the Certificate of Competency as Second Mate FG or NWKO (NCV) and have attended the relevant competency course for the respective grade.
Documentary evidence shall be issued to those who have successfully completed this course indicating that the holder has completed training in the use and operation of an electronic navigation system based on this model course.
