AFF - Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting



The course aims to provide the training in advanced fire-fighting in accordance with STCW regulation 1978 as amended in 2010, REG.VI/3, Sec.A-VI/3 Para.5, and Table A-VI/3.  The emphasis of the training is in organisation, tactics and command.


This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW regulation 1978 as amended in 2010, REG.VI/3,Sec.A-VI/3 Para.5, and Table A-VI/3. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in advanced fire fighting, a trainee will be competent to take command, organise and train fire parties and control fire-fighting operations. The seafarer will have acquired knowledge of fire prevention and an ability to inspect and service fire detection and extinguishing systems and equipment. He will also be able to investigate and report on incidents involving fire.


The course is open to all seafarers who have completed basic training in fire prevention. All trainees must be certified by a doctor as being in good health. 


On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in STCW regulation 1978 as amended in 2010, REG.VI/3, Sec.A-VI/3 Para.5, and Table A-VI/3. 

Note: If designated to control fire-fighting operations, seafarers must have successfully completed advanced training in techniques for fire-fighting with particular emphasis on organisation, tactics and command. This training forms part of the competence required of all officers.

A certificate may be issued only by centres approved by the administration.
