Objectives

Upon completion of the course, trainees will have the knowledge, understanding and proficiency to:

  • Perform an Officer of Watch’s (OOW’s) look-out responsibility
  • Perform or take (handle) an OOW’s navigational watch
  • Satisfy an OOW’s requirement to notify the
  • Master in certain situations
  • Perform navigational watch-keeping under diverse environmental conditions
  • Keep effective watch at both day and night
  • Complete situation-based simulator exercises

Course certificate

Documentary evidence shall be issued to those who have successfully completed this course indicating that the holder has completed training in Radar Simulator as approved by the Merchant Shipping Division of the Government of Sri Lanka.

Entry Standards

The trainee undertaking this course should have undergone pre-sea training for deck cadets and sea service of not less than six months as Deck cadets. OR

The trainee should have competence in deck training, have completed sea service for Certificate of Competency as Second Mate FG or NWKO (NCV) and have attended the relevant competency course for the respective grade.

In addition, all trainees should own a Certificate of Proficiency for ROSC and ARPA and have at least three months of sea service associated with bridge watch-keeping duties under the supervision of a qualified officer.
